  • 1 cup Masoor Dal (red lentils) Rinse and soak for 2-3 hours or overnight.
  • 1 piece green chili, chopped Adjust quantity based on spice preference.
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • to taste Salt
  • Water as needed To achieve pourable batter consistency.
  • Oil for cooking Use as needed to coat the skillet.

Preparation

  • Rinse the masoor dal under running water and soak it in enough water for at least 2-3 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse again.
  • In a blender, combine the soaked lentils, green chili, ginger, turmeric, salt, and water to make a smooth batter. The consistency should be pourable but not too thin.

Cooking

  • Heat a non-stick skillet or pan over medium heat and add a little oil to coat the surface.
  • Pour a ladleful of the batter onto the skillet, spreading it into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the edges lift slightly and the underside is golden brown.
  • Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.
  • Repeat with the remaining batter, adding more oil as needed.

Notes

Masoor Dal Chilla is best served warm with chutney, yogurt, or curry. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
