  • 1 lb ground beef Preferably a lean mix (85/15).
  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin) Thin slices cook evenly and meld with the meat.
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped) Adds sweetness and depth.
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella) Freshly shredded melts better.
  • ½ cup milk Gives creaminess and helps bind the layers.
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted) Enriches the dish and helps milk soak into potatoes.
  • to taste salt Start light and adjust after baking.
  • to taste pepper Freshly ground gives the best aroma.
  • to taste garlic powder Adds a subtle savory note.

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef for 7 to 10 minutes until browned, then drain excess fat.
  • Return the skillet to medium heat, add chopped onion, and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent.
  • Season the beef-onion mix with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, stirring for another minute.
  • Peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
  • In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the potato slices and season with salt and pepper.
  • Spread the beef-onion mixture over the potatoes.
  • Top with the remaining potato slices.
  • Whisk together milk and melted butter, then pour over the top.
  • Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly on top.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Check doneness by poking a fork into the potatoes; they should be tender.
  • Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve with a side of salad or steamed vegetables. Optionally, top with sour cream or green onions. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or freeze for longer storage.
